Facebook's Graph Search will help us discover a slew of things based on the people we are connected to, their experiences, their likes, their relationships, etc. It's also using that data to push further into how we interact with the network beyond likes. Adjectives will be a big part of Facebook's future, the first of which I experienced today in terms of "reacting" to content.
I was killing time in a car dealership today and cruising through my Twitter stream when I came across this tweet from Todd Defren:
Apparently it's my FIVE YEAR Twitterversary. Wow. This thing's been on for 5 years? Can you envision it being around another 5?
Consequently, after the tweet, he wrote this about his twitterversary:
I read it and thought hey, I've been on Twitter nearly as long and I should probably reflect where I was five years ago today as opposed to today. Here are those random thoughts:
This is the time of year that predictions flood the web. I usually do a list of my own and was going to bail on it this year because I just didn't have the energy. However, over the past 24-hours, I've had a handful of people ask me where my list was.
So, in typical Big Guy fashion, here's the only 2012 prediction list you'll ever need to read:
The 2011 Boston Red Sox won't be remembered for winning a ton of games. They won't be remembered for an ace pitching staff that rocked the AL. They won't be remembered for grinding out wins after a very rocky start to the season.
They will be remembered for "The Collapse."
As most sports fans know, the Sox were sitting pretty in the AL East up until August. The team slowly declined and lost the division lead to the Yankees. The skid continued well into September and the Sox found themselves clinging on to the Wild Card spot in the playoffs. However, as fate would have it, a surging Tampa Bay team played their guts out, won the Wild Card spot, while the Sox pointed fingers at each other and wondered, "What if?"
There were many things to point towards in terms of the reason for the demise of the 2011 Boston Red Sox. However, instead of speculating, the Boston Globe did a investigate reporting type article, detailing the postmortem.
Here are the highlights:
The Patriots stand at 2-1, tied in a jammed up AFC East that has the Buffalo Bills, yes, those Bills, at the top of the division. The Pats face a tough Oakland team this week on the road. The defense isn't playing as it should be. Brady, normally stellar, looked more like Steve Grogan than he did Brady last week.
So, you figure that the sports media would have a lot to write about (not to mention that the Red Sox are one loss away from a monumental collapse), right?
While America pauses and reflects on the horrific events of September 11, 2001, there's parallel path that's being taken by many who are moving on, healing and celebrating life, not mourning.
Of course, this path is walked because time is a powerful thing. It heals and is a catalyst for people to move on from tragedy. And, one of the ways in which people move on, is by watching sports.
Who could forget professional sports getting back under way in the fall of 2001. The NY Yankees in the World Series (and nearly winning it). NFL stadiums bleeding red, white and blue (capped by a team called the Patriots, winning the Superbowl earlier that year).
And today, the NFL kicks off their Sunday ritual with celebration and remembrance.
The Boston Globe launched a new blog called the Obnoxious Boston Fan. Yes, you guess right. It's all about Boston sports, with a slant towards how obnoxious us fans can be as we follow the Bruins, Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox.
For those of us who are part of this heralded (and hated group), you'll love it. For those who aren't, you'll hate it.
Guess that's the point.
