Four months ago, I lost my dad. It was unexpected and every day since, I've missed him more and more. Today is the first Father's Day without him and it sucks.

But, this post isn't about me. It's about you. It's about those of you out there with kids and who's father is still with us.

Do me a huge favor today and help me honor my dad.

Hey dad, been a while. I hope you are well wherever you are. It's been nearly four months since you passed and it's not getting any easier. In fact, with each day, the pain is pretty unbearable at times. The loss is equal to a thousand yard, gaping hole in the earth caused by an unexpected meteor.

We celebrated your birthday. We had a First Communion. We had preschool graduation. We've celebrated some many things since you've passed and with each occasion, there was a sense of loss that was heavy on everyone's hearts.

Well, tomorrow is Father's Day. It's the first without you and to be brutally honest, it fucking sucks. Sorry for the crass words, but there's really no other way to describe it.

Today the Globe has a story about the dilemma parents face with social networking.

[Social Networking] It’s become one of the most pressing questions for parents of children growing up in the digital age: When should they let their children join Facebook or should they be on the site at all? An estimated 7.5 million preteens - including 5 million under 10 - are part of the social network in violation of Facebook’s terms of service, according to Consumer Reports.

I have nephews and a niece who are under the acceptable age for signing up for Facebook, but are on Facebook. I see the interactions they have with their friends and family. Sometimes I find it strange. Sometimes I find it cool (mostly because I can keep up with how they are doing in school, athletic activities, etc.).

Google Father's Day

Ah Father's Day, the one day of the year that we are celebrated for all the things we do for our kids and family. Well, I guess that's not totally true because every day is Father's Day in my house. There's nothing better than being a dad. I have two wonderful kids and a beautiful wife that keeps the family running. She's the CEO, while I play the CFO role.

I find it kind of funny that we celebrate dads (and moms for that matter) only one day out of the year. Parenting is not a cake walk. It's a lifetime of challenges. And while my kids are only 7 and 4, I'm only really starting my journey as a dad. As my mom says, "the bigger [kids] get, the bigger problems they have."
