Dealing with change in business

I've been around the block when it comes to business. I've worked at all types of agencies. I've worked with all types of people. I've worked with all types of clients.

The only thing that stitches all of that together is change.

It happens.

Most people hate it.

I don't let it bother me.

Here's why.

I've been in the journalism/PR/digital marketing business for 18 years (in that order). If you've ever worked at an agency, you know that the lines between PR, advertising and marketing has become blurred because of online communications, i.e. social media.

The space is become very crowded. Guru's are a plenty. Books are being written at a feverish pace; books on Google+, Facebook, social media in general, location-based stuff, etc.

It's never ending and to be brutally honest, it's tiring.

Here's what I'd like to see from PR, advertising and marketers in 2012:

I'm 38 years old today. Before you blast the comments with old guy insults, just head over to Twitter and search for #bigguydroast (or just click the link).

I've learned a few things over the past 38 years. Some good, some bad. Most of which you probably already know. Regardless, I thought I'd share anyways.

In no order of importance or relevance:

My disdain for politics is well-known (at least by my friends and those that read this blog). My feelings toward the folks that run the City of Revere are also pretty well documented. To cut to the chase, read the post where I tell the powers that be to STFU and get back to work.

So you can imagine my disgust when I read this article from the Revere Journal.

The Readers Digest version goes like a little something like this: an unnamed source says that one of the mayoral candidates tried to get the cops to arrest another candidate for drunk driving -- actually, catch them in the act, then having them arrested.

The person being accused is George Rotondo. In my STFU post, I mentioned that he has been the only politician I've talked to that gave me the impression that he actually cared about the issues that are important to me:

Dear City,

I have lived here for seven years. For the most part, it has been uneventful, which is how I like it.

In recent years, there has been a rash of criminal incidents in the general vicinity. Now, I realize that you can't keep all crime out and that it's the general nature of society. But I just don't see anything being done by the city, other than answering 911 calls.

I'm ranting on this because last week, someone tried to break in next door. My neighbors tell me they aren't getting any information from the cops or the city and that it's pretty much been swept under the rug. I'm not sure what the story is there, but who really knows.
