Today, after 25 years, Microsoft unrelieved a new corporate logo. As an Apple fan, I really couldn't care less. However, as a marketer, I find it fascinating that a blue chip brand like Microsoft would spend the time updating their corporate look.
It's a smart idea. Here's why.
Families spend a lot of time together at home these days, typically digesting hours and hours of digital media and entertainment. Mom is in the living room checking her Facebook page and favorite blogs. Dad is on his tablet checking the latest scores on ESPN. One of the kids is downloading HD movies from iTunes and another is catching up on her favorite TV show on Hulu, while yet another may be streaming and playing the latest MMORPG from Steam.
It’s a challenge for the whole family to spend more time together. Maybe, just maybe, if there was a state-of-the-art media and entertainment center in the home, they all could enjoy it and share their favorite movies, television programs, games, photos and sports with each other.

Today the Globe has a story about the dilemma parents face with social networking.
[Social Networking] It’s become one of the most pressing questions for parents of children growing up in the digital age: When should they let their children join Facebook or should they be on the site at all? An estimated 7.5 million preteens - including 5 million under 10 - are part of the social network in violation of Facebook’s terms of service, according to Consumer Reports.
I have nephews and a niece who are under the acceptable age for signing up for Facebook, but are on Facebook. I see the interactions they have with their friends and family. Sometimes I find it strange. Sometimes I find it cool (mostly because I can keep up with how they are doing in school, athletic activities, etc.).
I've watched The Social Network a zillion times. The movie is pretty good, but what fascinates me is the story behind the creation of the biggest technological advance of my lifetime (I don't count PC's or mobile phones because they were in the works, to a certain extent, before I was born or before I knew what they were).
Facebook.
Just the word along means a zillion things:
Google bought Zagat. Holy cripes batman. That's big news and big doings for the search giant.
Why?
Google is 13 years old today. It's not old, but in terms of how the tech giant has changed the web, business productivity and arguably mobile, they have done a heckuva lot in just 13 years.
What will the next 13 bring?
