Today, after 25 years, Microsoft unrelieved a new corporate logo. As an Apple fan, I really couldn't care less. However, as a marketer, I find it fascinating that a blue chip brand like Microsoft would spend the time updating their corporate look.
It's a smart idea. Here's why.
Microsoft has been getting beat down by the likes of Apple, Google and Facebook. Each of their corporate brands are cool, "new" and resonate with a wide audience. The house that Gates built, on the other hand, comes across as an old, stodgy brand that still relies on code-heavy software to make their numbers.
For you PC peeps out there, don't bash me about the anti-Microsoft thing. I'm not anti-Microsoft. Their productivity suite is much better than Apples. For sure.
The company is making a good move by taking their stuff to the cloud, but they will continuously feel -- at least my opinion -- like an old brand.
The logo change and the cloud movement is a good thing for the brand. I applaud them for the effort, though I think the font style is a little too Facebook-ish (with a little serif action going on).
What do you think of the new logo?
