Facebook: You're Boring, So I'm Leaving
No, I'm not quitting Facebook, though it appears that many of you are (and feel the need to share it with all of us).
A survey released last week by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 61 percent of Facebook users have taken a “Facebook vacation."
The Boston Globe's Joanna Weiss writes:
Forget about the privacy concerns, the onslaught of ads, the annoying design of your profile page. If people are slowly turning away from Facebook, it’s not because the company has overreached or gone over to the dark side. It’s because we’ve come to realize that people are boring.
Yes, folks. You are boring and by you, I mean me too.
We've become Facebook robots. We're posting the same old stuff, all the time. Photos of our kids. Rants about work. Comments about what's on TV. Hatred for our political leaders. Loathing of our sports teams.
Facebook has become a hodgepodge of randomness. That's what drew us to the network in the first place. I'm guessing that we are just getting bored.
I suspect this is why posts like, "What's your favorite spice to put on baked potatoes?" gets more comments than a post about local elections.
Are we in a social media depression, such as the one I predicted a few years back? Or, are we just tired. Tired of keeping up with the joneses. Tired of feeling the need to share everything. Tired of the drama that often comes along with sharing what's inside your head that should have remained in your head (and getting blasted for it).
Maybe we're just tired...simply tired, and as Joanna wrote, need a vacation from Facebook.
How are you feeling about Facebook as of late?
