This weekend I had one of the best Fourth of July's ever.
We didn't do anything too crazy nor was what the family and I experienced out of the ordinary.
Our Fourth festivities always starts with the annual Point of Pines block party. PoP as we call it, is a little neighborhood in Revere, MA where my mother has a house that comes deeded with a portion of Revere Beach (a private section that she technically owns). The PoP block party is always on the third of July. As a result, we call it PoP03.
We had great food and even better company with friends and family. We grilled a ton of food, drank some beers and smoked some stogies. The evening was capped off by a self-generated fireworks display (to the tune of a couple thousand bucks). The police are cool and allow for the fireworks just as long as it's under control and kids are safe and far away from the action.
The next day, which of course is the Fourth, we did our customary stay at home day. We grilled and had dinner outside in the backyard. As we were eating, the F-1 fighters that were flying to Boston for the July 4th event on the hatshell with the Boston Pops, flew over our house. It was incredible and honestly sent chills down my spine.
We went inside and watched the Pops deliver an unbelievable performance (the Kennedy family salute was touching -- this is part of the event prior to the shown going national).
Then we went outside and watched our neighbors light off fireworks, which were awesome. The kids did sparklers.
Overall, it was a great break from reality and a Fourth that was a great one -- one that I look forward to outdoing next year.
