39 Things I've Learned About Life

Today is my birthday. I'm 39. This year, in particular, was a challenging year because of a variety of things. Despite those challenges and the emotional roller coaster I've been on, there are 39 things -- yes, 39 -- that I've learned that will help me over the next 39 (God willing):

  1. Family above all else. Period.
  2. A loving wife is the best support base you can ever have
  3. Kids make the biggest difference in whether you stay grounded and humbled
  4. Laughing should be a daily ritual
  5. Don't sweat the small stuff
  6. Work is only work unless you really enjoy what you love what you do
  7. You can do anything, if you just take the time to learn
  8. Helping others is something we all need to do more of
  9. Social networking has helped us get closer to people we've lost touch with so value those relationships
  10. Technology is not a hindrance
  11. Learn as much as you can about everything; it'll come in handy
  12. Read, read and read more
  13. Challenge yourself every day
  14. Take time to reflect on what's important in your life regularly
  15. Don't be affraid to ask for help
  16. When you have to say no, just say no
  17. A smile can go a long way
  18. A hug can go a longer way
  19. Love big
  20. Hate small
  21. Taking care of your health is a must do
  22. Even if you're not a writer, write
  23. Take chances, you never know where they are going to lead you
  24. It takes time, but trust people
  25. Help others when you can or even when you can't
  26. There's always someone less fortunate than you, remember that
  27. There's always a job out there for you; you just have to find it, earn it and own it
  28. I love New England and our crazy weather
  29. Supporting your teams is a natural born right, regardless of what the haters say
  30. Take as many photos and videos as you can to capture memories; it's important
  31. Get to know your neighbors
  32. Get involved in local politics and issues that matter to you most
  33. Embrace change because it happens, regardless
  34. Doodle when you can; the creative part of your brain will thank you for it
  35. Random is good, because you know, it's random
  36. Be silly, because you know, you can
  37. Music can heal
  38. Take comfort in those that respect, love and cherish your company
  39. Losing someone you love is the most difficult thing you'll ever go through, but there's light on the other side of that tunnel
