Today is my birthday. I'm 39. This year, in particular, was a challenging year because of a variety of things. Despite those challenges and the emotional roller coaster I've been on, there are 39 things -- yes, 39 -- that I've learned that will help me over the next 39 (God willing):
- Family above all else. Period.
- A loving wife is the best support base you can ever have
- Kids make the biggest difference in whether you stay grounded and humbled
- Laughing should be a daily ritual
- Don't sweat the small stuff
- Work is only work unless you really enjoy what you love what you do
- You can do anything, if you just take the time to learn
- Helping others is something we all need to do more of
- Social networking has helped us get closer to people we've lost touch with so value those relationships
- Technology is not a hindrance
- Learn as much as you can about everything; it'll come in handy
- Read, read and read more
- Challenge yourself every day
- Take time to reflect on what's important in your life regularly
- Don't be affraid to ask for help
- When you have to say no, just say no
- A smile can go a long way
- A hug can go a longer way
- Love big
- Hate small
- Taking care of your health is a must do
- Even if you're not a writer, write
- Take chances, you never know where they are going to lead you
- It takes time, but trust people
- Help others when you can or even when you can't
- There's always someone less fortunate than you, remember that
- There's always a job out there for you; you just have to find it, earn it and own it
- I love New England and our crazy weather
- Supporting your teams is a natural born right, regardless of what the haters say
- Take as many photos and videos as you can to capture memories; it's important
- Get to know your neighbors
- Get involved in local politics and issues that matter to you most
- Embrace change because it happens, regardless
- Doodle when you can; the creative part of your brain will thank you for it
- Random is good, because you know, it's random
- Be silly, because you know, you can
- Music can heal
- Take comfort in those that respect, love and cherish your company
- Losing someone you love is the most difficult thing you'll ever go through, but there's light on the other side of that tunnel
