Beer Review: Dogfish Head Bitches Brew

Mobile Photo Sep 6, 2010 10 12 58 AM.jpgI'm a big micro-brew fan. I love all the random flavors that craft brewers come up with. Some are light. Some are heavy. Some go good with steak, others with pasta. You name a beer and chances are, I've had it or know of it -- similar to my pal the Belching Monkey.

Recently, I've been on a Dogfish Head kick. Their 90 Minute IPA is probably the best IPA I've ever had. They also make a pumpkin ale, which throws so many flavors at your palette that you feel that there's a party going on in your mouth.

Basically, the entire line of Dogfish beer is fantastic. I'm a big fan and could be considered a fan boy.

They make a few brews that come in speciality bottles, including their Black and Blue (another gem of a beer).

While I was in the store the other day, the craft brew guy was showing me all the new brews he received that week. One of them was Dogfish's Bitches Brew.

If you're a jazz fan, you'll about Bitches Brew:

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew - a bold, dark beer that's a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root, a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.

When I poured a glass of Bitches Brew, I immediately thought Guinness. It had the same sort of texture and body. When it first hit my palette I got the following flavors: chocolate, cream and sweet spices. The mid palette had the same flavors, but just richer and stronger -- maybe with a hint of coffee. The back palette flavors sort of jumped out at me a little as a sweet coffee feel flooded my mouth. The after taste was just as sweet and it lingered for quite some time.

Bitches Brew has 9% ABV and a IBU rating of 38. I give it an A-rating.

If you're a craft brew fan and love the Dogfish line, do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of Bitches Brew. You won't be disappointed.
